Sálim Ali's passion for birds suffused all his work – as a teacher, a scientist, a writer, and a conservationist. His books include the vast 10 volume Handbook of the Birds of India and Pakistan and the classic Book of Indian Birds. In 1976, he was awarded one of India's highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan.
