Chapter 144 Su Wanwan faints
Chapter 144 Su Wanwan faints
Su Wanwan shook her head: "I'm fine."
"Nothing's wrong," Lin Weiwei said. "You've been up for two days straight. If you keep going like this, it'll be your turn to lie in bed. Go back, take a shower, and get a good night's sleep. Bai Si'an is here."
As she spoke, she gestured with her chin towards Bai Si'an: "Right, Technician Bai? You can keep an eye on me, right?"
Bai Si'an nodded: "Yes."
Su Wanwan was indeed tired.
She had barely slept these past two days, and now that she was finally able to relax, she felt heavy all over and her head was spinning.
When Bai Rongbei returned after washing the lunchbox and heard their conversation, he looked at Su Wanwan and said, "Go back. I'll take you."
Su Wanwan hesitated for a moment, then looked at Lin Weiwei: "Then you..."
"I'm perfectly fine," Lin Weiwei said. "Let's go quickly. If you don't leave now, I might kick you out."
Su Wanwan stood up, her legs a little numb. She swayed, and Bai Rongbei reached out to support her.
"Then... I'll come again tomorrow," Su Wanwan said.
"Don't come tomorrow," Lin Weiwei said. "Rest well at home tomorrow. Come back the day after tomorrow."
Su Wanwan nodded, gave Bai Si'an a few more instructions, and then followed Bai Rongbei out of the ward.
The corridor smelled strongly of disinfectant.
As Su Wanwan walked, she felt her feet were floating, as if she were walking on cotton.
She shook her head, trying to clear her head.
Bai Rongbei walked beside her, glancing at her sideways: "Are you feeling unwell?"
"I feel a little dizzy," Su Wanwan said. "I'm probably too sleepy."
Bai Rongbei didn't speak, but slowed his pace.
As I left the hospital, the afternoon wind of the Gobi Desert blew in my face, carrying the dry heat of the sand.
The sun was so bright and dazzling that it was hard to open one's eyes.
Su Wanwan squinted, feeling even more dizzy. She raised her hand and rubbed her temples.
Bai Rongbei saw this and stopped in his tracks: "Can't walk anymore?"
"I can walk," Su Wanwan said, "but I'm a little...tired."
As she was speaking, her vision suddenly went black for a moment, and her body swayed.
Bai Rongbei caught her, his arm firmly supporting her waist: "Wanwan?"
Su Wanwan wanted to say that she was fine, but when she opened her mouth, no sound came out.
The black fog in front of her grew thicker and thicker, her ears rang, and then she knew nothing more.
Bai Rongbei's expression changed, and he picked her up and quickly walked towards the family compound.
Several soldiers encountered on the road were stunned when they saw Commander Bai carrying someone and walking hurriedly.
Bai Rongbei ignored him and strode forward quickly.
Once inside the residential compound, he kicked open his own gate, carried Su Wanwan into the house, and carefully placed her on the bed.
Su Wanwan was pale, her eyes were closed, and her breathing was very light.
Bai Rongbei reached out and touched her forehead; it was a little hot.
He turned around, went to the yard, fetched a basin of cool water, soaked a towel in it, wrung it out, and placed it on her forehead.
Then he rushed out of the yard and went straight to the neighbor's.
The plump aunt next door was hanging clothes to dry in her yard when she saw Bai Rongbei come in and was startled: "Commander Bai, what's wrong?"
"Auntie," Bai Rongbei said urgently, "Could you please go and call the army doctor? My wife has fainted."
Upon hearing this, Aunt Pang dropped the clothes she was holding: "Oh dear! I'll go right now!"
She took off running.
Bai Rongbei returned to the room, sat on the edge of the bed, and looked at Su Wanwan.
Her brows were slightly furrowed, and her lips were a little dry.
He picked up the glass, scooped up some water with a spoon, and carefully moistened her lips.
The military doctor arrived quickly; she was a woman in her forties who ran in carrying a medicine kit.
She checked Su Wanwan, took her temperature, and listened to her heartbeat.
"How is it?" Bai Rongbei asked.
"It's nothing serious," the female medic said. "She was just too tired and caught a chill, so she had a low-grade fever. Her body couldn't handle it, and she fainted. Let her get some sleep, sweat it out, and the fever will go down."
She opened the medicine box and took out a few pills: "Take these when she wakes up. One pill at a time, three times a day."
Bai Rongbei took the medicine and nodded.
The female military doctor looked at Su Wanwan's clothes, then at Bai Rongbei: "Commander Bai, wipe her down and change her into clean clothes so she can sleep more comfortably. Wipe her down if she sweats, so she doesn't catch a cold."
Bai Rongbei paused for a moment and said, "I... I'll ask Aunt Pang to come and help."
The female military doctor understood and smiled, "Okay. I'll head back now. Call me if you need anything."
After the military doctor left, Bai Rongbei went next door to invite Aunt Pang over.
Aunt Pang was quick and efficient. She fetched warm water, wiped Su Wanwan's body, and changed her into clean pajamas.
Bai Rongbei stood with his back to the door until Aunt Pang finished before turning around.
"Commander Bai, I'll head back now," Aunt Pang said. "Call me if you need anything."
"Thank you, Auntie," Bai Rongbei said.
After seeing Aunt Pang off, he closed the door and returned to the bedside.
Su Wanwan had changed into clean cotton pajamas. Her face was still pale, but her breathing was more steady.
The towel on his forehead was getting a little hot, so he took it off, soaked it in cool water again, wrung it out, and put it back on.
Then he sat on the edge of the bed and just looked at her.
The room was quiet, with only the sound of the wind outside the window and Su Wanwan's soft breathing.
It slowly got dark.
Bai Rongbei got up, lit the kerosene lamp, and placed it on the bedside table.
A dim, yellowish light spread out, illuminating Su Wanwan's face.
She was sleeping soundly, her eyelashes casting soft shadows under her eyes.
My lips are a little dry and cracked because of the fever.
Bai Rongbei moistened her lips gently with a cotton swab dipped in water. He moved very lightly, afraid of waking her.
At night, Su Wanwan started sweating. Fine beads of sweat covered her forehead and neck. Bai Rongbei wiped her sweat repeatedly, changing the towel several times.
In the latter half of the night, her body temperature gradually decreased, and her breathing became more stable.
Bai Rongbei checked the temperature of her forehead and breathed a sigh of relief.
He sat in the chair, leaned over the bed, and kept watch.
After some time, he fell asleep.
The next morning, Su Wanwan was woken up by the sunlight.
She opened her eyes, momentarily confused.
Before me was the collar of a white-clad, northern-style military uniform shirt, its buttons neatly fastened.
She shifted slightly and realized she was being held tightly in his arms, her face pressed against his chest, and she could hear his steady heartbeat.
Su Wanwan's face turned red instantly.
She remembered that she had fainted on her way back from the hospital yesterday.
And then...and then I don't remember.
She quietly looked up at Bai Rongbei.
He was still asleep, his brow relaxed and his breathing even.
A bluish stubble appeared on his chin, and there were faint shadows under his eyes.
He stayed by her side all night.
A warm feeling welled up in Su Wanwan's heart, but she also felt a little embarrassed. She moved slightly, trying to get out of his arms.
Bai Rongbei woke up as soon as he moved.
He opened his eyes, and his first reaction was to reach out and touch her forehead.
"The fever has subsided," he said, his voice hoarse from just waking up.
Looking into his eyes, which were so close to hers, Su Wanwan blushed even more and whispered, "Mmm... I feel much better."
As she spoke, she subconsciously glanced down at her clothes. It wasn't the outfit she wore yesterday, but a clean nightgown.
Bai Rongbei noticed her gaze and said, "Auntie Pang changed your clothes. I just wiped you down."
He spoke naturally, but his ears were a little red.
