Chapter 24 If I move in sooner, I can live with my wife!
"Thank you," Lin Weiwei said, "for helping us with the work today."
Bai Si'an pushed up his glasses: "I want to live in this house too."
Lin Wei smiled slightly: "Couldn't you put it another way? Like, 'You're my wife, it's only right that I help you'?"
Bai Si'an: "..."
His ears felt a little hot, and he looked away: "Stop being so cheeky."
Lin Wei smiled even more happily.
At this moment, Bai Rongbei and Su Wanwan came in from outside.
Su Wanwan didn't do much work outside. After working for a while, she was forced to rest by Bai Rongbei.
The two of them came in covered in dust, especially Su Wanwan, whose face and hands were covered in lime spots.
"Is the outside finished?" Lin Weiwei jumped off the table and asked.
"I've finished one side," Su Wanwan said. "I'll finish the other side this afternoon."
"Are you still going to use it this afternoon?" Lin Weiwei wailed. "I can't even lift my arms."
Bai Si'an glanced at her: "You can rest this afternoon."
"Really?" Lin Weiwei's eyes lit up.
"Okay." Bai Si'an nodded. "My brother and I can do it."
Bai Rongbei nodded: "You two should rest."
Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan exchanged a glance, both seeing the words "we're saved" in each other's eyes.
"Well... thank you for your hard work," Su Wanwan said softly.
"It's not tiring," Bai Rongbei said, then paused and added, "You guys must be tired this morning too."
These words warmed Su Wanwan's heart once again.
At noon, the four of them went to the cafeteria for lunch.
After a morning of work, everyone was hungry, and they ate with extra relish.
Lin Weiwei munched on a cornbread bun and mumbled, "Right now, I think this cornbread bun is absolutely delicious."
Su Wanwan took a small sip of her porridge and nodded, "Me too."
Bai Rongbei and Bai Si'an ate quickly and finished eating in no time. They sat there waiting for them.
After the two finished eating, Bai Rongbei said, "You two go back to your dorms to rest this afternoon. Si'an and I will go paint the walls."
"I'm so sorry..." Su Wanwan said.
"There's nothing to be embarrassed about." Bai Rongbei stood up. "Let's go, I'll take you back first."
The four returned to Bai Rongbei's dormitory.
This small room has been transformed into a "girls' dormitory" by Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan in the past few days.
There were two enamel mugs on the table, with the words "Serve the People" printed in red on them. They had bought them from the service store.
The jar contained red dates and goji berries, which were also bought from the service center; Su Wanwan said they were good for replenishing qi and blood.
Two glass bottles sat on the windowsill, each containing a few unidentified wildflowers that Lin Weiwei had picked from the Gobi Desert. Though wilted, they added a touch of life to the room.
There were two sheets on the bed, one military green and one floral, which they brought from home.
A floral print sheet was laid on top, covering the stiff military green sheet, making it look much warmer.
Two wicker boxes stood in the corner, with towels and a change of clothes draped over them.
The whole room was filled with a girlish atmosphere.
Bai Rongbei and Bai Si'an stood at the door, neither of them going in for a moment.
"You...rest now," Bai Rongbei said. "We're leaving."
"Okay." Su Wanwan nodded. "You all should also take care to rest and not overwork yourselves."
Bai Si'an glanced at Lin Weiwei, who waved at him and said, "Keep it up!"
Bai Si'an: "..."
The two brothers turned and left.
After they left, Lin Weiwei closed the door, lay down on the bed, and exclaimed, "Ah, that feels so good!"
Su Wanwan sat down as well, rubbing her arms: "I'm really tired."
"But the house is almost finished." Lin Weiwei turned over and looked at the ceiling. "Once it's done, we can move in."
"Hmm." Su Wanwan nodded, paused, and then said, "Weiwei, after we move in... how will we live?"
Lin Weiwei sat up: "What? How are we staying?"
"It's just..." Su Wanwan bit her lip, "Should we each live with our own husbands, or should the two best friends continue living with us...?"
Lin Weiwei understood.
She lay back down, staring at the ceiling, and after a while said, "Wanwan, I don't want to live with Bai Si'an."
"Why?" Su Wanwan asked, "Weren't you two...doing really well?"
"What's so great about it?" Lin Weiwei pouted. "Last time I wanted to... you know, with him, but his face darkened immediately because of his leg. Now, just thinking about that expression makes me lose all interest."
"Besides," Lin Weiwei continued, "I don't want to be separated from you either. We've been together since we transmigrated, taking care of each other, isn't that great? If we're separated, it would be so boring for me to live alone."
Su Wanwan didn't actually want to separate from Lin Weiwei either.
In this unfamiliar era and unfamiliar place, Lin Weiwei is her only support and the only person who understands her.
Living with Bai Rongbei...
Although Bai Rongbei is a nice person, the two of them don't have much affection for each other, so living together would definitely be awkward.
"But..." Su Wanwan hesitated, "We're married now. If we don't live with our husbands, people will gossip."
"Let them say what they want," Lin Weiwei said, unconcerned. "We'll live our own lives and not care what others say."
She sat up and looked at Su Wanwan: "Wanwan, what do you think? Do you want to live with Bai Rongbei?"
Su Wanwan was silent for a moment, then shook her head: "I don't want to."
"That settles it then!" Lin Weiwei slapped her thigh. "We'll still live together! Let Bai Rongbei and Bai Si'an live together!"
"Huh?" Su Wanwan was stunned. "This...this will work?"
"Why not?" Lin Weiwei said, "The apartments in the family compound each have three rooms, which are prepared for the kids. We can share one room, and they can fit in however they want!"
The more she talked about it, the better she thought the idea was: "Besides, this way we can look after each other. If you live with Bai Rongbei, he'll always have a long face, it'll be so boring. If I live with Bai Si'an, he'll be ashamed of his leg and will always have a dark expression, it'll be unbearable for me too."
Su Wanwan listened and thought it made sense.
But... would the Bai brothers agree?
"Will they... agree?" she asked.
"Who cares if they agree or not," Lin Weiwei said. "The house was allocated to us; we can live there however we want!"
Su Wanwan thought for a moment and nodded: "Okay, then we'll still live together."
The two of them agreed to stay together.
In the afternoon, Bai Rongbei and Bai Si'an were painting the walls in the family compound.
With the experience gained in the morning, I was able to refresh the page even faster in the afternoon.
Both brothers are efficient workers; one scrapes off the plaster from the wall, and the other paints it, working together seamlessly.
Only occasionally would Bai Si'an stop and rub his right leg.
"Take a break if you're tired," Bai Rongbei said.
"It's nothing." Bai Si'an shook his head and continued working.
He was actually a little anxious.
The sooner the house is ready, the sooner we can move in.
If I move in, I can live with Lin Weiwei.
