Chapter 313: Married Love (Extra Story 3)
"I wish it were as simple as you say," Summer Lowell sighed softly.
The baby in her arms looked up at Summer with big, watery eyes and suddenly burst into laughter, seemingly without reason.
That laugh made Summer’s heart melt, and sparked a thought in her mind—a desire to have a little bundle of joy to amuse every day.
Speaking of having a baby, Summer suddenly remembered the contraceptive pills she had hidden in the wardrobe.
"Vivian, I just remembered something!"
Vivian Sullivan saw her anxious expression and became tense too, "What’s wrong? Speak slowly, don’t rush!"
Summer was just about to speak when she hesitated, returning the baby to Vivian first. She then got up and walked to the door, checking the surroundings outside before returning.
"What’s going on? You’re being all mysterious."
Vivian looked at her with curiosity and amusement amidst the tension. "Did you do something you’re guilty about, afraid Maxim Sinclair might hear?"
Vivian spoke without intent, but Summer took it to heart.
"Do you remember when I asked you for a bottle of contraceptive pills?"
"Oh, that thing? I remember. What’s up? You’re not still taking them, are you? Those pills aren’t good for your health, try to cut down. If you take too much, it might affect your ability to have children later."
Summer’s expression became complicated, "I haven’t taken them in a long time, but I did finish more than half the bottle. Will there be any side effects? Is the drug potent?"
"More than half the bottle? My goodness, have you been treating them like candy? You and Maxim, are you playing so recklessly in private?"
Vivian couldn’t help but laugh amid her surprise, "If you really took that much, it might affect your ability to have kids in the next couple of years, but don’t worry. I’m a professional obstetrician, I can help you regulate things."
"That’s good, I almost forgot you’re an excellent doctor. I’ll rely on you for this matter."
Only then did Summer feel slightly relieved.
Although Vivian’s words comforted her, Summer still felt uneasy inside.
Back at home, she sat at the table in a daze, not responding until Maxim called out to her several times.
"What’s going on? Did you leave your soul at Dr. Sullivan’s place? I wanted to talk to you since we got back, but you seemed distracted, lost in thought—what are you thinking about?"
Maxim pinched Summer’s cheeks gently, "What’s bothering you? Tell me, I’ll help you handle it."
Summer looked at him, hesitating for quite some time before ultimately not daring to say, "Forget it, afraid you’ll get angry."
"Now you’ve piqued my curiosity, come on, spill it. You have to say it, or I won’t be able to sleep tonight."
"Then be sleepless, I absolutely won’t tell," Summer shook her head and freed her face from his hands before running upstairs to avoid him. "I’m not hungry, you eat, I’m going to bed."
Downstairs, Maxim grew more worried as he thought. He took some food from the kitchen and went upstairs to find Summer, planning to coax her into eating and see if he could get her to open up.
He coaxed and persuaded her to eat a bowl of porridge.
Having fed her, the sleepy and sluggish Summer leaned against the small couch, dazedly staring at the TV news.
Maxim returned downstairs with the dishes, changed into comfortable home clothes, came behind Summer, and began to massage her shoulders while pondering how to get her to reveal her feelings.
"Charles Jenson is lucky to have a child before me—a cute little girl; I envy him. When do you think we’ll have a cute kid like that?"
After he spoke, Maxim perceptively noticed a slight stiffness in Summer’s movements.
She seemed to be triggered by some keywords in Maxim’s remarks.
Reflecting on what he’d said earlier and linking it with Summer’s reaction after returning from Charles Jenson’s home, Maxim subtly probed, "Forget the child thing for now, I notice you’re kind of guilty—did you do something that wronged me?"
Summer turned to look at him, "Alright, I can tell you what’s wrong, but first you must promise not to get angry."
"Tell me, I won’t be angry; I’ve worked hard to win my wife back—I’m not brave enough to be mad at you!"
Maxim spoke casually, but Summer felt more guilty inside upon hearing him, "I’ve been hiding something from you; today seeing Vivian’s child reminded me suddenly."
"What is it?"
Summer led Maxim to the wardrobe, rising suddenly, making him comprehend her previous distraction.
Summer retrieved a bottle from the corner that looked like it contained vitamins, handing it to Maxim with a guilty face, "Although the label says vitamins, it’s actually filled with contraceptive pills."
"Why take these pills? Afraid once you have a child, you won’t be able to leave me?"
Time had passed, and Summer’s feelings were complex returning to the topic, "Our relationship was so strained back then, always tense like drawn swords, and you’d restrict my freedom when you got furious. My personality wouldn’t let a child bind me to you."
"Of course not—it was my fault back then," Maxim confessed honestly, "I used the wrong approach; you’re someone who responds better to gentle persuasion. I should express my true intentions with actions, slowly winning you over. Anyway, the current outcome is good. Let’s leave the past behind."
Seeing such a major incident pass lightly, Summer showed disbelief, "I secretly took contraceptive pills, won’t you be angry?"
"Back then, I was a bit extreme too; you took them for self-protection—it’s ultimately my fault. Why should I be angry at you?"
Today Maxim seemed surprisingly understanding, "But you’re indeed not as healthy as before, I’ve asked the Butler to invite Dr. Adler over. His family has practiced medicine for generations, including traditional Chinese medicine. When he arrives, he can check your pulse and prescribe some restorative remedies."
Though Maxim spoke well, Summer keenly sensed something amiss in his words, "Wait, did you discover long ago I was secretly taking contraceptive pills?"
Maxim remained silent.
Summer looked at him, suddenly enlightened, "So, did you switch the pills in this bottle?"
"My wife is always so smart, hahaha!"
Maxim laughed heartily.
